Many homemade Halloween treats call for melted chocolate, but which chocolate is the best to use? Find out which chocolate is best as well as some helpful cooking tips.
Cocoa Butter Chocolate
The best type of chocolate to use for Halloween treats is anything with a high cocoa butter content. White chocolate has the highest amount of cocoa butter (20% or less) vs. Dark Chocolate (18% or less). The cocoa butter allows you to temper the chocolate, which is going to allow it to harden.

So if you are dipping pretzels or making Halloween-shaped chocolate candy from plastic molds, you want to temper the chocolate.
Many grocery stores and craft supply stores have a section with special melting chocolate. It’s available in small discs or pieces and tends to be easier to melt.
Melting wafers are often used for chocolate fondue, but can also be used for any type of melting chocolate treat for Halloween.
Melting wafers usually come in different varieties of chocolate, such as milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate.
While not the best option, you can also use chocolate chips when you are in a pinch. Chocolate chips won’t temper since they don’t have enough cocoa butter, so it won’t harden completely when your treats cool off. However, they still have the same great chocolate flavor, are inexpensive, and easy to use.
When melting chocolate chips, you can either do it in the microwave or on the stove. Just make sure you stir often and use the chocolate as soon as it has melted.
